Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are a means by which the government regulates the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target. Under the target, all electricity retailers and wholesale buyers have a legal liability to contribute towards the generation of additional renewable energy. They are called ‘liable parties’, and meet their legal obligation by acquiring renewable energy certificates.

RECs can be created when you install:
- complete solar hot water systems
- small generation units such as photovoltaic systems

Your renewable energy certificates can be sold to agents such as Green Energy Trading. The price of certificates varies with market forces. Renewable energy certificates are not a government rebate or refund.

RECs for solar electricity systems

You can calculate the number of RECs your system is eligible for using the following formula:

system capacity (kW) x solar zone rating* x deeming period (5 or 15 years)

* Solar zone rating for Melbourne and Hobart is 1.185
